Crown Jewel

Crown Jewel

Warm and earthy tones make this space the pinnacle of comfort. Making sure to create a connection between the existing home and the cinema space, materials that were used in the rest of the home were incorporated into this design. Specifically, the rough sawn cedar ceiling was brought in to contrast the timber veneer used on the walls. In doing this, the textural differences create balance, allowing the material palette to become a perfect balance between smooth and rough.

Under The Moonlight

Under The Moonlight

A carefully integrated cinema into an already existing space, this cinema is the perfect example of how through careful design decisions and consideration a dedicated cinema room is possible in any space. Through simple choices like a removable fixed frame screen and considered air ventilation, the cinema room was able to be fully functioning whilst not effecting the integrity of the original space.

Let There Be Light

Let There Be Light

Designed in a room with a large bay window this cinema had two main problems to navigate, light and sound isolation. Both problems were easily overcome with careful design decisions, including a blackout blind, double glazing and a basic air-lock system. The cinema itself is sophisticated yet simple in design. With neutral tones and lush textiles, this space very easily became an elegant cinema room with a bay window seating area suitable for reading or relaxing.

Cinema Overview

A simple clean design, utilising different acoustic fabrics to create a sleek and distinct wall pattern. The perfect example of how through simple techniques a beautiful room is created. Not only does the wall design serve an aesthetic purpose, but it also ensures the acoustic experience of the room is unmatched. The use of curtain softens the room and aids in giving the space an inviting and homely feel.

Project Details

The cinema was designed for the director of a custom installation company as a live in display home. Their strength was security & home automation, so we were engaged to ensure the cinema was a true reference system. As a specialist cinema engineering company, we were more than pleased to assist.

The cinema space was already allocated in the home design. Once the sound isolation system was deducted from the inside of the concrete shell, the room proportions delivered a good frequency response. The only initial issue with the room was the lack of ceiling height. The slab above the cinema was not level and provided as little as 25mm above the ceiling, which made mounting lights in critical positions difficult. The goal was a simple design, with function the main priority.

Project Features

  • Cinema designed as a live-in display home for a custom installation company director.
  • Emphasized security and home automation, creating a reference-level cinema.
  • Room’s proportions provided good frequency response after sound isolation.
  • Challenge of limited ceiling height addressed for functional design.
  • Provided exceptional audio/video system and managed entire cinema project.
  • Detailed construction plans for sound isolation, custom HVAC, and security features.
  • Integrated biometric access and magnetic lock for secure entry.
  • Impeccable execution results in a true reference system in every aspect.

As well as providing a remarkable audio/video system, we also project managed the cinema, and joinery and created the interior design concept. The detailed construction drawings provided include sound isolation details, air conditioning design including custom attenuators and plenums built into the structure to reduce rattles, custom bass traps & baffles, ventilated hush box design and sound isolated door design.

There is a biometric thumb print reader to activate a motorised cinema door and magnetic lock and on the inside of the cinema is a button to open the door, with a mechanical override.

Every element of the design is executed perfectly. This is a true reference system in every sense of the word

Cinema Overview

A unique and unforgettable design inspired by Art Noveau architecture. This cinema design is bold and striking in nature filled with strong colours and carefully curated lighting. The use of various soft textiles and colours assists in adding dimension, warmth and softens the overall space. The luxurious sheen of the cinema chairs and moody lighting enhance the cinematic ambience and elevate the space.

Our goal with any cinema is the same; to engineer the room to meet the client’s desired outcomes, both in acoustic & aesthetic design.

Project Details

In this particular case, we were looking at a room capable of seating 15 people, with the potential for additional loose seating to accommodate up to 20 people. The client wanted the system to meet industry standards, but with the global financial crisis hitting, the room was scaled back to meet a specific budget. The result is a stunning audio/video system that has room to be upgraded over time. The client is a philanthropist and has long used their architectural award-winning home to accommodate charity events and school functions. We were told from the start that the cinema needed to reflect the prestige of the property.

Project Features

  • Art Nouveau-inspired design with bold colors and curated lighting.
  • Luxurious sheen of cinema chairs enhancing the ambiance.
  • Custom-built elements including seating, cushions, and timber profiles
  • Features a stage for musical performances, reflecting the family’s musical background
  • Moody, eclectic atmosphere akin to the Hemisphere Bar in Sydney
  • Entire interior design remained consistent throughout the project
  • Redesigned seating room and staircases with antique furniture
  • A labor of love resulting in a prestigious space proudly displaying awards

Initially we were brought onto the project by the dealer to build a cinema originally designed by a company in America. Everything had been designed, including selection of the Audio/Video equipment, cinema layout and design, but the design had to be quickly abandoned. This turned out to be a huge benefit, as it allowed us to explore the design deeper and provide a result the client had never dreamed possible.

The client’s family all play musical instruments. It was requested that we factor this into the design and create a stage. The design process for this project extended over a year. Once completed, we took on the entire building contract to construct the cinema. Everything on the project was custom designed and built, including all the cinema seating, cushions, timber profiles, etc.

When engaged by the client they were unaware Wavetrain were also experienced interior designers. We proved our capabilities with the client at one of the early design meetings where it was discussed that the clients loved the atmosphere of the Hemisphere Bar in Sydney. We visited the bar one night to experience the space and work out how to apply it to a cinema room. From this the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody Cinema’ was born. Essentially the brief was a dark, moody space with luscious materials, elegance and an eclectic style. The interior design boards we created early on weren’t altered for the entire length of the project.

Wavetrain also took on the redesign of the seating room and two additional staircases. Wavetrain sourced antique furniture and custom-made cushions, chairs, etc to achieve a unique outcome.

A real labour of love and we know the clients proudly display their awards in the cinema.
